Garden Weatherizing Workshop

Hi Master Gardeners,

My name is Cami, I just started as the Community Gardens Coordinator for the city! I am working on putting together a Winterization Workshop on Dec 7th from 1-3pm at Hal Jensen Community Garden in collaboration with our partner NACA- the flyer below has some details. I wanted to let the CMGA know about the event and invite you all, as well as ask if you would have any bulbs available to donate?

We are looking for allium and floral bulbs. They will go towards education during the workshop and ultimately they will be planted in our communal and pollinator spaces to feed the community and attract pollinators to the gardens come spring! Let me know if I would be able to access any through your seed library or from individual members who have some on hand.

I so look forward to partnering with you this season!
Thank you!

Sustainable Botanical Paper Making

Adult Workshop: Sustainable Botanical Paper Making

November 16 @ 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

$45

Join Estefania Villaquirán, creator of Natural Integrators, for a fun and creative step-by-step paper-making workshop. You will learn firsthand the techniques of working with recycled materials and pressed flowers to create one-of-a-kind sheets of paper. By repurposing fiber from old books and egg cartons, you will dive into the process of shredding, blending, pulping, screening, dyeing with flowers, draining, pressing, and drying. You will also receive a pre-made card to adorn with pressed flowers, which you will take home, along with your newfound knowledge of papermaking.

Through years of experimenting with this technique, Estefania has developed strong skills in the art of making handmade paper cards at home and has made them available to the community. She creates her art pieces by integrating pressed flowers and meaningful typewritten messages. Her workshops focus on promoting mindful attention and presence, enhancing creativity, connection with nature, and relaxation.

Cost: $45 non-members, $40 Willow Bend members, includes materials. Space is limited.

Native Plant Society Meeting Flagstaff

June 18, 2024 Chapter Meeting at 7 p.m.

Wendy McBride: Conserving Rare Plants and Their Pollinators
The need for information on the basic biology, including reproductive systems and pollination ecology, of rare species is integral to both species-and community-level conservation efforts. Angiosperms are often dependent upon interactions with animal pollinators for successful reproduction, and pollinators are often reliant upon plants for vital food and other resources.
This talk explores the pollination ecology of two rare plants occurring in Arizona, Erigeron rhizomatus (Zuni fleabane), and Sphaeralcea gierischii (Gierisch’s globemallow), and the tightly bound relationship between plants and their pollinators. This mutual dependence informs conservation efforts and reminds us of the complexity of organisms, their intricate connections and interconnected fates, much of which we still do not understand despite our impacts on the environment around us.

Wendy is a botanist based in Flagstaff. She has a background in teaching, independent botanical research,
and working as a consulting botanist. She has been working with plants for 18 years and enjoys opportunities to learn more about plants and explore their biology, ecology, and taxonomy

Residential Permaculture Design

Residential Permaculture Design

When rainwater hits your roof what happens to it? Join Dr. Roslynn Brain McCann on a journey that will help you think through your home landscape design from an integrated, ecological - or permaculture - lens, starting at the top (your roof). We will explore ways to slow, spread, sink, and store rainwater and greywater on the landscape, and to use that water to grow perennial edible, pollinator attracting, soil stabilizing, nutrient accumulating, and nitrogen fixing plants. Ideally, you will leave with the intention to apply at least one new tool or technique to increase the water and ecological resilience of your own landscape.

Our presenter, Dr. Roslynn Brain McCann is an Extension Specialist at Utah State University. She uses conservation theory, communication techniques, and social marketing tools to foster positive environmental behaviors in the areas of land, air, food, water and energy conservation. She is also the coordinator for Utah Farm-Chef-Fork, the USU Permaculture Initiative, and Sustainable You! kids’ camps.
