Slug Garden Update/Volunteering

Saturday 10-4-14 tour at 8:30 - 9:15; Garden hours 9:30 -12:30.  Come and join in!  
This Saturday, The Joel Olson Classroom project continues with Sierra West  leading Americorps, ACE and SSLUG Garden volunteers!  Sra. Marina Vasquez, AIS Distinguished Indigenous Elder will also be joining us working in the garden along with students from AIS 470 and the Native American Cultural Center. And, as always, we will be harvesting vegetables from the garden to take to Flagstaff Family Food Center, and for our own nourishment and enjoyment!

Regular SSLUG Garden hours now through November 15th (weather allowing): 
Drop-in any time during garden hours and help harvest, water, weed, plant, make compost, collect seeds, orient others and begin to prepare the garden for winter.

Wednesdays and Thursdays: 1pm -4pm

Native Plant Society Flagstaff Chapter Monthly Meeting and Walk

Evening Program

Tuesday, October 14*, 7:00 p.m.: Dr. Wendy C. Hodgson, “Pre-Columbian Agaves in

Southwestern United States: A New Way of Looking at Species and Their Cultural Landscapes”

at the Shepherd of the Hills Church, 1601 North San Francisco.  Easy to find! Easy to park! This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Hodgson is Research Botanist and Herbarium Curator at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix,

Arizona. She is interested in the flora of the Southwest, particularly the Grand Canyon region, rare and endemic plants, and systematics of Agave and Yucca, including pre-Columbian agave cultivars.

 

Wendy coordinated the Cactus family treatment for Intermountain Flora and is head of the Cactaceae of Western U.S.project by Garden research staff and research associates. She is an avid plant collector who strives toward making high quality herbarium specimens.

The talk will focus on how the importance of agaves to Mesoamerica’s cultures has distorted the plants’ role for cultures north of the U.S.–Mexico border. Pre-Columbian farmers cultivated several species of agave in Arizona dating to at least A.D. 600 that have persisted in the landscape to the present. Most probably they  originated in northern Mexico and were traded as far north as the Grand Canyon. Verde Valley is a region of intense agave cultivation, having at least four of the five known domesticates. Landscapes and plants should be viewed from a cultural, rather than “natural” perspective that helps discern cryptic species and requires interdisciplinary collaboration.

Horseshoe Ranch Adaptive Restoration and Stewardship Program

Greetings, All,
This information about the Horseshoe Ranch Adaptive Restoration and Stewardship Program may be of interest to you. 
Project Purpose:  
Northern Arizona University researchers are collaborating with the Department to use the Ranch, as one of three sites for establishing an experimental cottonwood garden, as part of a regional-scale research project to investigate the impacts of climate change and exotic species on riparian ecosystems in the southwest U.S.   The project will also contribute towards a Ranch management goal to enhance and restore native riparian wildlife habitat on the Ranch .

Flagstaff Festival of Science

During the Flagstaff Festival of Science Sept. 19-28, 2014  ("The 10 Best Days of the Year"), there will be an amazing number of excellent presentations and field trips.  You can find information on them all by going to http://www.scifest.org/

One that might be of particular interest to native plant lovers is the Open House at the Fort Valley Experimental Station on Sunday, September 21 from noon until 3 p.m., Hwy. 180, 1 mile north of Snowbowl Road.  The native grasses are astounding; and the blossoming flowers are outstanding all summer.  Late in September there still may be a few to see. 

This is the only day all year when the Experimental Station is open to the public.  You will be able to:

• visit research plots and learn about on-going research at the station;
• take a walking tour and learn about native grasses;
• tour the historical buildings and learn about the history of the Station; and,
• make fun pine cone crafts with your children.

Garden Clean-up Raffle

Thanks to Molly Larsen and all those who helped with the "Garden Clean-up Raffle". More than $2000 was raised to assist master gardener projects in 2015. The winners of the two prizes were:  Carole Mandino (ticket sold by Michele Lytle) and Melanie Lembke (ticket sold by Debi Stalvey). The clean-up crews will meet and schedule October days for the work by Master Gardeners from Coconino County. The two lucky winners will get three hours of yard/garden work done by five master gardeners; that’s 15 hours of labor!   A load of aged horse manure is also available for delivery to the winners which can be spread by the workers. Thanks go also to those who purchased tickets for this first time event. I guess I will have to plant my own bulbs after all!

> So…. the name of the powder coating business is Iron Horse Coatings, 1300 S. Thompson St., Set. B and the # is 774-3700. Doug and son, Matt are the owners and really nice people. Good communicators and that counts for a lot in business today! Our 6 pieces were completed in a very timely way.

They also make a 15” square one. Pricey but watch for the price reduction sale when buying at least 2. They come with casters and the system to tell you when to water is great!

The yard is fairly mature. The bones were there when we bought the house 14 years ago. We have added and subtracted over the years. The yard is a series of gardens, separated by paths. We added a flagstone patio and a small lawn this year which greatly added to our enjoyment of the space.
