Welcome to the Coconino County Master Gardeners Association

The Coconino Master Gardener Association began in 2009 to create a corps of well-informed volunteers, and to deliver quality horticultural education programs adapted to our regional high elevation environment. The association provides support for Master Gardener graduates and volunteers as well as continuing education and opportunities to participate in community programs that increase the visibility and participation in the Master Gardener Program.


Monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Adult Workshop: Morel Mushrooms with Mike Dechter

Join Arizona Mushroom Society Executive Director, Mike Dechter, for an in-depth exploration of morel mushrooms in Arizona.

This workshop will cover where and when Morchella species grow, key indicators and tools to help you find them, and best practices for a successful hunt. To complete the experience, Mike will prepare a sample of delicious morels from last year’s harvest for participants to enjoy.

The winter chill is here, warm up by building your own tea!

This workshop with Ashley Doyle from Cinderfly Apothecary is designed to uplift your spirits in the midst of winter while teaching you how to craft personalized tea blends, for self-care or to share with loved ones! With February on the horizon, we will focus on selected herbs known for their affinity with the heart. Participants will enjoy demonstrations, tea tastings, and the opportunity to create their own tea sachets. Don’t forget to B.Y.O.M. (Bring Your Own Mug)!

Adult Workshop: Sustainable Botanical Paper Making

Join Estefania Villaquirán, creator of Natural Integrators, for a fun and creative step-by-step paper-making workshop. You will learn firsthand the techniques of working with recycled materials and pressed flowers to create one-of-a-kind sheets of paper. By repurposing fiber from old books and egg cartons, you will dive into the process of shredding, blending, pulping, screening, dyeing with flowers, draining, pressing, and drying. You will also receive a pre-made card to adorn with pressed flowers, which you will take home, along with your newfound knowledge of papermaking.

Through years of experimenting with this technique, Estefania has developed strong skills in the art of making handmade paper cards at home and has made them available to the community. She creates her art pieces by integrating pressed flowers and meaningful typewritten messages. Her workshops focus on promoting mindful attention and presence, enhancing creativity, connection with nature, and relaxation.

Cost: $45 non-members, $40 Willow Bend members, includes materials. Space is limited.

Adult Workshop: Mushrooms, Fungi and More!
Wednesday, August 14th, 6:00-8:00PM

Join Mike Dechter of the Arizona Mushroom Society to learn more about the cryptic kingdom - mushrooms and fungi. This presentation* will be for those with incidental knowledge and curiosity about fungi. Mike will present on some fungi 101 - what are fungi and why are they important? He will also discuss basic mushroom anatomy, and identification of wild mushrooms. The last part of the presentation focuses on our Arizona Fab 4 Fungi - 4 easy to ID, edible wild mushrooms that grow here in northern Arizona.

Annual Herb Fest - June 15th  

Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, in collaboration with the Forager's Path School of Botanical Studies, is excited to host the second annual Native Herb Festival on June 15th. This all day event includes expert-led workshops, hands-on opportunities and informative plant walks. Last year's event sold out! Visit our website for more information and to sign up. Steller's Jay Painting - Willow Bend

 


February Adult Workshop: Steller's Jay Painting 

Join Willow Bend and artist Elaine Dillingham on Saturday February 10th 1-4:30PM to learn about and paint a Steller's jay. During this 3.5-hour, limited enrollment, friendly & informative workshop you will receive step-by-step watercolor painting instruction. Art materials are supplied. You will take home two small paintings. Instructor Elaine Dillingham has taught painting at Coconino Community College for 20 years. A supporter of environmental education, Elaine is delighted to be able to partner with Willow Bend Environmental Center staff members to offer nature-based art learning experiences.

Botanical Ink Making - Willow Bend

 


January Adult Workshop: Botanical Ink Making

Join us on Saturday, January 27th, 10AM-12PM for an instructional natural ink making. We will make several inks together and get the opportunity to play with different hues all made from plant material. Every student will go home with a bottle of botanical ink. This workshop combines learning with play! Jill Sans is a painter and owner of The HeArt Box Gallery in downtown Flagstaff. She focuses primarily on paintings of the natural world; from botanical art to mandalic representations.

Pine Needle Basket Making at Willow Bend

 

November Adult Workshop

Marina Xoc Castillo de Vasquez will be leading her always sold out pine needle basket making workshop on Saturday, Nov 18th from 10AM-12PM. Workshop will cover different types of baskets, materials needed for basket making, collecting and choosing needles, and step by step instructions on how to make your own basket. Participants will have the opportunity to start and finish a small basket and apply new skills to make larger or decorated baskets. All participants will get hands-on experience and take home their basket and supplies.

Worm Composting at Willow Bend

 

Worm Composting 

ONLY A FEW SPOTS LEFT! Join Willow Bend Environmental Education Center, in partnership with the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Section, for a FREE family focused workshop that's all about worms! Workshop will be held on Monday, September 19th from 5-6PM. Explore the world of red wigglers as we cover worm anatomy, ecology, diet, and discuss how vermicompost is made. Participants will learn how to build and maintain their own worm compost bin and take their new worm farm home to compost all of their food scraps (optional). Program is sponsored by the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Section, but spots are limited and registration required. Sign up on our website.
