What Are the Bees’ Kneeds?

A Local and Organic Beekeeping Workshop at The Hat Ranch
near Williams, Arizona

Taught by Patrick Pynes (Flagstaff) and David Loeffler (Prescott)
of the Northern Arizona Organic Beekeepers Association (NAOBA)

Saturday, August 27, 2022, from nine a.m. to one p.m., Arizona time


In this hands-on workshop, we will explore answers to these important questions:

•    How can humans work with the honeybees, rather than against them?

•    What is the Heroes to Hives project? How do we bring together honeybees, beekeepers, and U.S. Military Veterans and Dependents, especially for our mutual benefit?

•    What is the Hat Ranch/Mogollon Rim: past, present, and future?



This bioregional workshop is appropriate for anyone who is interested in learning more about a local and organic approach to small-scale beekeeping in the Little Colorado River and Verde River watersheds, and all points in between.

Tuition: $20 for U.S. Military Veterans and Dependents; $60 for the general public. Limited to twelve participants.

Indigenous Futures - Climate Justice - Santa Fe Indian Market

 IllumiNative Event: August 20th and 21st

We want to highlight an event happening next week where our very own Jennifer Muskrat-Velarde will be joining the IllumiNative event panel to talk about Climate Justice, during Santa Fe Indian Market.

Jennifer Muskrat-Velarde, our RMSA Grants and Fiscal Coordinator, has been invited to speak on Climate Justice, alongside an amazing group of Native artists, actors, activists, and organizers for IllumiNative's "Indigenous Futures: Envisioning The Next 100 Years," an exclusive event held during Santa Fe Indian Market, August 20-21. Featuring Indigenous programming, empowering panel discussions, and exclusive viewing to the already sold-out Santa Fe Indian Market Fashion Show.

AZ Native Plant Society Meeting

 

Our next talk, via Zoom,  will be:  Kat Thompson – Food sovereignty of the Laguna and Navajo Nation

Presentation Description: This presentation will provide examples of ancestral and current Indigenous farming practices that have sustained communities and cultures in the Southwest for thousands of years. These agricultural practices can revitalize a local landscape into an edible landscape that is reflective of our bioregion and our diets.  This includes exploring traditional uses of native plants and trees, and how to utilize them in a local food system.

Bio: Kat Alicia Thompson grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona.  She received her graduate degree from Northern Arizona University in Forestry and Applied Indigenous Studies. Her studies focused on how tribes can secure food sovereignty through environmental land management practices. Currently, Kat is located in New Mexico and coordinating with Indigenous farmers in creating edible landscapes.
