Master Gardener Project Updates

Below are 2 Master Gardener Project updates:

Hozhoni 2016 Grant
We here at Hozhoni put our grant money to good use. We were able to make a seating area using sandstone pavers and castle rock.  The seating area is located between our 3 step garden, dance floor patio. This new seating arrangement allows our clients the ability to sit and enjoy the garden, soak up some sun, and during our dance events, a place to relax and listen to music.  See attached for a few pictures of the project.  Thank you for your support of this project!

Sunshine Rescue Mission

The garden at Dorsey Manor was productive this past year.  We harvested 41 pounds of vegetables.   The harvest went to the S.R.M. kitchen for meals for the community.  Harvest was lower this year.  I did not utilize the smaller raised garden because the wood frame rotted out and was not replaced.  I also estimated weights this year on the low side.  I did not utilize Ernie's scale this year for weighing vegetables as I had done in previous years.

Here is the harvest break down:

Radish - 1 lbs.
Lettuce - 2 lbs.
Onion - 3 lbs.
Beans - 12 lbs.
Squash - 8 lbs.
Tomato - 15 lbs.       (From 5 plants)

Total - 41 pounds

I entered the Sunshine Rescue Mission garden into the Coconino County Fair this year for horticulture and ribbons were awarded.

I have pulled all vegetables from the garden.  I turned the soil in the large garden and covered it with straw.  We will start again in April or May of 2017.

I shot a video of the growing season at Dorsey Manor for 2016.  It is available on YouTube.  Here is the link.

We remember Tim Miller for his help with the garden in previous years.
