CMGA January 2016, Meeting Minutes


Coconino Master Gardener Meeting Minutes
Thursday, January 14, 2016
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church - 1601 N. San Francisco

Attendance – 27 people were in attendance

Welcome – Jim Mast

·         President’s Annual Report – Jim highlighted several of the CMGA activities including the calendar, the 2015 home show, the summer garden tour, the seed library, the garden conference and the fall clean-up project.  There were 96 paid members in 2015.

·         Introduction of 2016 officers -  Jim Mast-President, Ed Skiba-VP, Sue Madden-Treasurer, Jackie Clark-Secretary

Speakers – introduced by Loni Shapiro.  The speakers were 2015 grant recipients

·         Monarch project at the Arboretum at Flagstaff – Sheila Murray
·         Sunshine Rescue Mission – Jeff Best
·         Olivia White Hospice Home – Linda Guarino
·         Grow Flagstaff Seed Library – Jackee Alston
·         Michael Moore Native Medicinal Garden – Judy Springer

 
·         Refreshments provided by Sherline Alexander and Jackie Clark
·         Raffle prizes provided by Loni Shapiro, Leslie Penick and Jackie Clark; $23.00 raised



Business Meeting – Jim Mast

·         Spring Master Gardener Class
o   Starts February 2 – take flyers and tell your friends!

·         Need chairs/volunteers for Fundraising and Volunteer Support Committees

·         Introduction – Trish Zilliox, newest Extension employee

·         Home show April 8 – 10, 2016 – Loni Shapiro and Jackie Clark
o   Several speakers have been lined up, but details about times and how many we need have to be arranged.
o   Volunteer sign-up sheets were available.  We also need more committee members. Watch the blog calendar for the first meeting details  (Feb. 19)

·         Financial report – Sue Madden (not present – given by Jackie Clark)
o   $9,395 income for 2015; $8,323 on hand

·         Committee Reports:

o   Volunteer Support – Crys Wells (Jim Mast reporting)

§  December:         30 reporting       851.75 volunteer hours                 171 education hours
§  YTD:                       96 reporting       4,736.00 volunteer hours              943 education hours

o   Fund Raising – this committee needs a new chair

o   Continuing Education – Loni Shapiro

§  March:  Tips for Starting Seeds – Stephen & Cindy Scott/Terroir Seeds
§  April:  Greenhouse Gardening – Jim Mast (with visit to his greenhouse on Saturday 4/16)
§  May:  Self-watering Containers – Jackie Clark
§  June:  Growing Roses at 7,000 Feet – Carol Chicci
§  July:  The Gardens of Paris/France – Molly Larsen; Coconino County Fair preparation
.  August:  Edible Native Plants in Flagstaff - Sheila Murray

o   Community Markets – Andrea Guerrette

§  The committee will decide of the community markets are a good use of volunteer time
§  Tables at the local garden centers were much more successful

·         Next meeting:  February 11:  History of Fruit Trees at Slide Rock – Kathy Shaw
