Roadrunner: Although typically desert dwellers, roadrunners may also thrive in cold climates by fluffing feathers for insulation and by exposing their black back feathers to the sun.

Reporting Master Gardener Hours

All master gardener trainees and certified master gardeners need to report their hours.
Beginning in 2010 certified master gardeners need to have 6 Education hours and 12 Volunteer hours in order to maintain certification. The on line reporting system allows you to report Education or Volunteer hours. You can sign in to record hours in the right hand column under Recording Volunteer and Education Hours. Just click on the U. of A.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new reporting system, please contact Brenda Smith (A - M) or Sue Madden (N - Z). Their contacts are listed at the bottom of the blog under

Please contact Sue Arnold at PrescottAZNPS@gmail.com or 928-910-9507 to participate. Meet at 7:30 AM in the Sam’s Club parking lot near Carl’s Jr and Chipotle. September Program - Debbie Allen:  “Botany, History, Exploration;  How a Southwest grass was named for two Spanish gardeners?”

Thursday, September 8, 2016 - 6:30 PM
Highlands Center for Natural History
1375 S. Walker Rd, Prescott AZ

When Carl Linnaeus designed a way to classify plants and animals in 1758 he probably had no idea that his system would be rapidly accepted and still used worldwide 250 years later. People honored by genus or species names live on in Latin names bestowed in the early 1800’s. We get only the briefest glimpse into their identities - “a French physician and botanist” or “an English botanist of the early 1700’s.” The genus Bouteloua - the wonderful gramma grasses of the Southwest - is named for two Spanish gardeners. Who exactly were these men, and how did they have a grass found only in the New World named for them?

Annual CNC Wildflower Celebration:

Saturday, September 10, 2016 - 7:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Community Nature Center
1980 Williamson Valley Rd, Prescott, AZ

After our region's annual summer rains, the diversity of wildflowers at the CNC's Interior Chaparral site is lovely. Join area naturalists on the trail to learn and have fun! Free wildflower walks will start every 15 - 30 minutes and last about an hour. Trails are not difficult, but some stretches are dirt with slope. Water and a portable restroom are available on site. Watch for a banner that will mark the turnoff.
